Two high-speed trains collided this morning, October 28, in Spain's central Toledo province, killing at least 10 people and injuring dozens, and officials say the death toll could rise further.

The accident occurred shortly after 9 a.m. local time, when a Spanish state-owned RENFE train crashed at speed into the rear of an IRYO train, owned by an Italian private company, that was stopped on the tracks, causing two carriages to derail and overturn, according to reports.

A regional government spokesperson confirmed to Spain's state-owned TVE television channel that a total of 544 passengers were aboard the two trains, that at least 10 people died, and that the death toll could rise.

International news outlets, citing local sources, are reporting that as many as at least 39 people may have died.

All high-speed rail services connecting the capital Madrid with southern regions have been temporarily suspended immediately due to the incident, and authorities are investigating the cause of the collision, according to reports.
