Military service law begins being taught in basic education schools to use students for the military

November 3

Education Deputy Minister Nay Myo Hlaing said on the 22nd day of the third regular session of the third People's Assembly under the coup government, held on November 2, that legal awareness education, including the military service law, has begun being taught in basic education schools.

In response to a question from Pyinmana Township MP U Soe Win about wanting to know from which year the teaching of law as a subject could begin in basic education middle and high schools, Education Deputy Minister Nay Myo Hlaing replied that the military service law is already being included in teaching at basic education schools.

He replied that, under the direction of coup military leader Min Aung Hlaing, legal awareness programs have been carried out starting from 2024-2025, and that lessons in the legal awareness curriculum have been taught starting from the 2025-2026 academic year.

It is said that in basic education high school levels Grade-10, Grade-11, and Grade-12, moral and civics subjects are being taught, and in addition, lessons from the legal awareness curriculum prepared by the Ministry of Legal Affairs are being taught.

In Grade 12, Chapter 8 of the legal awareness book, the People's Military Service Law, is already being taught, and it is said that the military service law is taught in Grade 12 for 24 class hours per year.

"There were statements before the power seizure that the mandatory military service system would be implemented only when the country reached a normal situation. But when the military seized power and the country was in chaos, the People's Military Service Law was activated. Young people's lives and futures were sacrificed to protect the military dictatorship. Now, under the name of legal awareness education, they are implanting in children the idea that they must serve in the military, and again working to give the military an advantage in the country," CDM Major Swel Taw told the city.

The coup military, starting from 2024, activated the military service law and has been giving military service training to men between the ages of 18 and 35, and now military service training batches have reached up to the 30th batch, and arrests through forced porter conscription across the country, citing the military service law, are also being carried out continuously.
