The El Niño climate phenomenon may reach its peak during November and December this year, and temperatures could rise extremely high in the coming winter and summer seasons, potentially causing water scarcity problems, the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has warned.

According to assessments by the World Meteorological Organization and international climate centers, the sea surface temperature of the tropical Pacific Ocean near the equator is running 2.5 to 2.8 degrees Celsius above normal.

Based on current atmospheric conditions, a very strong El Niño condition continues to persist and is forecast to reach its peak in November and December 2026.

Due to this El Niño phenomenon, extreme weather events such as irregular rainfall patterns, irregular storm formation, high temperatures and drought may occur, it is stated.

In addition, water levels in rivers, streams, lakes, wells and ponds may decrease, and there may be shortages of drinking water and irrigation water, heatstroke, dehydration and outbreaks of diarrheal diseases due to water scarcity, it has been warned.

Reservoirs may also receive low water inflows, which could reduce hydropower generation capacity, while electricity demand may rise further, so the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has advised that advance preparations be made.
