German Chief of Defence General Carsten Breuer Selected as Chairman of the NATO Military Committee

German Chief of Defence General Carsten Breuer was selected as Chairman of the NATO Military Committee on September 19.

The defence chiefs of NATO's 32 member countries made the selection during a meeting held in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The 61-year-old German Chief of Defence will begin his duties as Chairman of the NATO Military Committee in the summer of 2027, succeeding the current chairman, Italian Navy Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone.

The NATO Military Committee is the alliance's highest military advisory body, and its chairman serves as the principal military adviser to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

Breuer will also be starting this role at a time of significant changes within the alliance.

Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and Trump's warnings regarding the US defence commitment to NATO, many European countries have been increasing their defence spending.

Germany also aims to increase its military spending to over 200 billion euros by 2030.

Breuer has served in the German military since 1984 and was also widely known as "the Chancellor's general" for leading Germany's crisis management committee during the COVID-19 pandemic.
