Idols Destroyed in Naga Region

Buddha statues are being destroyed in Naga region

October 19

It is reported that Buddha statues have been repeatedly destroyed in Lahe town, Naga Self-Administered Zone, Sagaing Region.

The Buddha images on the historic pagoda hill in Lahe town, which have been built and worshipped since the time of Prime Minister U Nu during the AFPFL era, are frequently being destroyed, and local residents say it is necessary to take legal action and control those responsible for the destruction.

"This makes it three times already, destroying the Buddha statues by throwing stones at them. There are also those who are testing their aim by throwing things. Some are destroying them by beating them with sticks. It is also partly because there are few Buddhists here," a local resident said.

It is also known that around 2024, the Buddha statues were destroyed in this way, and although local Buddhist devotees repaired and restored the damaged statues, they say the statues have been destroyed once again this time.

There are diverse religious beliefs in the Naga region, and it is understood that people want those who carry out unlawful destruction to be effectively held accountable under the law so that unwanted religious problems do not arise and so that people can coexist together.
