Driver and passengers arrested under export-import law over jeans carried in vehicle

Driver and passengers arrested under import-export law for allegedly transporting jeans on a vehicle

October 19

A six-wheeled vehicle was seized by the junta military for allegedly transporting jeans from the Saik Khaung area in southern Shan State to Taunggyi, it is reported.

On the night of October 15, a six-wheeled bus traveling from the Saik Khaung area toward Taunggyi near Hpar Mone village was stopped and inspected by a joint team under the junta military, which seized Chinese jeans from the rear section of the vehicle and also arrested the driver and those traveling with him, it is reported.

"Because they keep stopping and arresting like that, commodity prices have gone up. With vehicle fuel costs, gate fees, and some tax expenses, it no longer adds up, so some bus lines have had to temporarily suspend operations. Some are just carrying whatever goods they can get to make a living," a truck driver said.

According to a statement by the junta military, three men have been charged under Sections 8/10 of the Export/Import Law at Taunggyi Township Police Station for allegedly transporting Chinese-made jeans worth over 450 million kyats.
