On the Monywa-Mandalay highway between Kyaukse village and Kon village in Sagaing Township, Sagaing Region, a Hijet passenger vehicle carrying travelers crashed head-on into a parked six-wheeled box truck (container) after its brakes failed, killing 10 people on board and seriously injuring 3, according to reports.

At around 10 a.m. today, October 5, a Hijet vehicle driving from Myaung Township to Mandalay suffered brake failure and crashed head-on into a six-wheeled box truck (container) parked along the Monywa-Mandalay road, killing 10 people including the driver and passengers in the rear of the vehicle, according to reports.

"Eight women and two men died. The remaining three are not yet conscious. The parked vehicle was carrying cement. The Hijet that crashed was coming to Mandalay to offer alms to monks when its brakes reportedly failed. Those who died include some elderly people around 50 years old," a local resident said.

Currently, the dead and injured have been transported to Sagaing General Hospital, and the three injured are still being monitored as inpatients at the hospital, according to reports.

From January to June 2026, a total of 1,686 traffic accidents occurred across Myanmar, killing 932 people and injuring 2,371, according to news reports.
