Trump Declares Support for Netanyahu Ahead of Israeli Election

US President Donald Trump has declared his support for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of Israel's parliamentary election scheduled to be held next week.

Trump wrote on social media on Sunday, October 18, and stressed the importance of US-Israeli cooperation in military operations against Iran.

Trump began his post with the heading "To the great people of Israel," and wrote that Netanyahu is a great warrior prime minister as well as a better partner for peace, and that his role in fighting the Islamic Republic of Iran is important.

Trump also continued writing, "This letter can be regarded as expressing my full and complete support for Netanyahu."

At the time Trump's declaration of support emerged, the latest Israeli public opinion polls estimated that Netanyahu's right-wing Likud Party could lose some parliamentary seats in the October 27 election. Until October 18, Trump had not publicly stated support for any side regarding the Israeli election.

Netanyahu, for his part, thanked Trump for his support via a video address and said he was "proud and delighted" to receive such exceptional support, as well as "humbled."

He also said the Israeli prime minister has stated that one task concerning Iran remains to be completed, and that Trump likewise said no one other than Netanyahu could finish the mission to be carried out against Iran, he said.

Netanyahu stressed that this matter concerns Israel's "very existence," and urged the Israeli people to support his party so that he can continue to hold power and, in cooperation with the United States, remove the threat from Iran.

As the election approaches, how Trump's support will affect the views of the Israeli people regarding the political situation Netanyahu is facing remains to be seen.
