Over 130,000 Children Born to Myanmar Mothers in Thailand Since Coup: MyoTaw

According to data from Thailand's Ministry of Public Health, the number of children born to Myanmar mothers in Thailand has risen significantly since the 2021 coup in Myanmar, with a total of 131,860 births recorded from 2021 to August 21, 2026.

Year-by-year figures show 18,905 births in 2021 and 18,728 in 2022, before rising to 24,154 in 2023 and 25,087 in 2024. In 2025, the number reached 28,869, marking the highest annual birth rate during this period.

For 2026, as of August 21, 16,117 children have already been born to Myanmar mothers.

Following the military coup in Myanmar on February 1, 2021, displacement to neighboring countries increased significantly due to violence and security instability.

Many people fleeing Myanmar have entered Thailand. According to UNHCR, Thai government records show that 45,025 Myanmar nationals entered Thailand for temporary shelter due to conflict between February 2021 and September 2023.

A report released in July 2026 by the HITAP Foundation on maternal and newborn health among migrants along the Thai-Myanmar border stated that undocumented Myanmar pregnant women and children have become an increasingly vulnerable group due to challenges related to migration and the healthcare system.
