Man arrested for threatening mass shooting at childcare center during conversation with AI chatbot

Police have arrested a man who threatened a mass shooting at a nearby childcare center while conversing with the Claude AI chatbot in Sydney, Australia.

A 29-year-old man named David Lane Sakray reportedly disclosed to the AI chatbot his plans to go and shoot at a childcare center near Westfield shopping mall in Horsleyville.

Because the conversation data was reported to Interpol, Sakray was arrested on October 18 and charged with using a communications network to threaten and harass, it is reported.

Prosecutors, in seeking to keep Sakray in custody, alleged during an October 19 court hearing that he intended to carry out a massacre like the Bondi Beach terrorist attack.

Sakray's lawyer countered that Sakray had asked the AI for help treating an ear infection, became stressed, and spoke in anger, that he had no intention of actually carrying anything out, and that he had no prior criminal record.

Currently, the Sutherland Local Court has ordered that Sakray undergo mental health assessments, and it is understood that the case will continue to be heard in court once the assessments are completed.

Anthropic, the company that created Claude AI, says its AI models are pre-trained to refuse content that plans or incites violence and to share information with relevant law enforcement agencies when necessary.

On December 14 last year, two gunmen opened fire on a crowd celebrating Hanukkah at Bondi Beach in Sydney, killing at least 15 people.
