Man Dies After Bear Enters Home and Attacks in Mongolia

October 10

A bear entered a home on the outskirts of Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, and attacked the people inside, killing one man and leaving one woman hospitalized in emergency care, according to reports.

The incident occurred on October 8 in Bayanzurkh District. The man, in his 40s, died at the scene, while the woman, in her 50s, managed to call for help from neighbors despite her injuries and escaped, but is currently hospitalized and in critical condition, according to reports.

Currently, a team of 35 forestry officials is searching for the bear, and locals have been warned to be cautious. Permits to capture bears have also been issued in eight provinces, it is said.

According to an October 8 announcement, bear sightings have risen to 754 across 11 provinces and the capital nationwide, with 80 percent being female bears with cubs, it is said.

Climate change and food scarcity have driven bears down toward human settlements, and an examination of a bear found in Khanti Province revealed nothing in its stomach, it is said.

Similarly, in Russia, at least 6 people have died from bear attacks, and in Japan, bears waking hungry from hibernation caused a record 13 deaths last year.
