Elon Musk ordered throttling of Starlink internet used by Ukrainian military, WSJ reports

October 21

Citing U.S. government officials, the Wall Street Journal reported on October 20 that Elon Musk ordered restrictions and a slowdown of the military-use Starlink satellite internet service from SpaceX, which the Ukrainian military relies on as its main communications tool.

Because Ukrainian forces depend heavily on Starlink not only for frontline battlefield communications but also for targeting strikes against Russia and for drone operations in air defense, the throttling is said to have caused major disruption to their operations.

Regarding the restrictions on the satellite internet service, President Donald Trump has said that neither he nor Elon Musk bears responsibility, while Elon Musk responded that any limits on internet speed or use of Starshield are solely in accordance with decisions by the U.S. military and the President.

In addition, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth implied that the government had not withdrawn the service, but that there may be an issue concerning the terms of service that Ukraine must comply with.

Currently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is working to rebuild relations with the United States, met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and discussed matters related to regaining permission to use the Starlink internet service, it is understood.
