Ex-Son-in-Law Arrested for Killing 76-Year-Old Grandparents in Chaungzon

An elderly couple, aged 76, from Nyaunglan Village in Chaungzon Township, Mon State, were found murdered in their home, and the suspect has been arrested — the perpetrator is reportedly their son-in-law.

At around 8:30 AM on August 22, U Maung Tin, 76, and his wife Daw Yin May were killed with stab and blunt force injuries at their home in Ward 7, Nyaunglan Village, Chaungzon Township.

"Both the husband and wife were 76 years old. The grandfather's body was found in the backyard. He had a 3-inch crack on his head, 2 stab wounds on his neck, and a fractured jaw injury. The grandmother was found dead in the front room with 1 stab wound to the front of her neck. Only their 10-year-old grandson was not killed," a local resident described the incident.

The suspect, believed to be Ko Aung Aung, who was formerly related as a son-in-law, was arrested by police at around 1:30 PM on August 24 near the "Nila Shwe Sin" fuel station on the Mawlamyine-Kyaikkhami road, Daung Zayat, Zaykyo Ward, Mawlamyine.

"What I heard is that this man was a drunkard and drug user. His wife couldn't endure his abuse, so she left the child with her parents and became a nun. When the man's wife became a nun, he came to demand gold from his in-laws. The grandfather and grandmother said they still had to raise their grandson and couldn't give it, so they argued and he killed them. He even took off the dead grandmother's earrings. The hidden gold inside wasn't found," a local resident told MyoTaw.

During interrogation of the suspect Ko Aung Aung, a pair of earrings weighing 2 ywe 3 kyat that he had taken from the deceased elderly couple was recovered as evidence, and the local police station has filed charges under case number (Pa) 48/2026, Penal Code Section 302.
